What a health coach is not
A health and wellness coach is not a doctor, a dietician, a nutritional therapist or a counsellor. First and foremost, health coaches are experts in behaviour change – they don’t assess symptoms, make diagnoses or treat specific conditions, but they can and do work alongside doctors, registered dieticians, nutritionists and other health care practitioners.
While health coaches are not nutritional therapists, some (but not all) health coaches are trained more specifically in optimising nutrition to support body systems, in assessing their client’s overall well-being and in using their unique training in lifestyle management to equip clients to empower themselves to make health-creating food and lifestyle choices and create and sustain healthy habits and behaviours.
It is important to check with a potential health coach that he or she is equipped to meet your needs, by clarifying the scope of practice defined by their qualifying school and the scope of their insurance cover before starting to work with them.
The scope of practice laid down by my school (The Institute of Health Sciences) for the Diploma in Nutrition and Lifestyle Coaching (Dip NLC) credentials me for both nutrition and lifestyle health coaching. I am insured with Balen’s Specialist Insurance Brokers for Health & Wellbeing Professionals & Organisations.
The UK Health Coaches Association
The UK Health Coaches Association’s mission is to become the professional body in the UK and Ireland for the advance of health and wellness coaching. A health coach currently registered with the Association has qualified from a training school deemed to have met the Association’s minimum standards.
The Association is working hard to establish and further develop a robust national framework for Professional Standards, Scope of Practice and Continuing Professional Development for health coaches in the UK and Ireland.
