Buying local and sustainable food is one of the key messages in The Real Food Solution – why and how local, seasonable real food, cooked from scratch is a powerful medicine for people and planet. The Covid-19 pandemic is bringing home to us very graphically the underlying vulnerability of human health.

Eating local, seasonal real food – especially organic, colourful fruit and vegetables which are rich in important phytochemicals that both programme and act on our immune system – has NEVER been more important for building and supporting a resilient immune system through this global pandemic… and beyond.

Buying local and sustainable food

The Covid pandemic is also showing us the weaknesses and unreliabilities in the global and national food production and supply chains…  at the same time that local producers are working to capacity to meet unprecedented demands.

Buying local and sustainable food is easier than you think. All that’s required is a mindset-shift to think outside the supermarket box and an hour or so online. 

Food supply systems in the UK have experienced numerous issues since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, but there are some innovative organisations which have stepped up to the plate.

The key seems to be in ‘localising’ the supply chain as much as possible, promoting sustainable practises and reducing food miles.

The Sustainable Food Trust

My friends at The Sustainable Food Trust have put together a really helpful article on how to source local and sustainable food. A brief summary of the article:

  • Farms to Feed Us – database of small-scale producers, many of whom had previously supplied restaurants but have redesigned and adapted their businesses owing to Covid-19.
  • Open Food Network – allows farmers and producers to sell online, and enables the creation of ‘virtual’ farmers’ markets in lieu of the real thing.
  • Big Barn – by inputting your postcode, this site shows you all the local producers and retailers supporting sustainable local agriculture, with daily offers from individual producers.
  • Farmer’s Weekly Market Map – a map of farm shops across the country which have remained open during the lockdown which allows consumers to support their local retailers.
  • Organic Growers Alliance, Land Workers Alliance and Community Supported Agriculture – allows individual businesses a route to market to share the produce they currently have available.
