Immune Resilience #13: Living with Worry in Uncertain Times – FREE RESOURCES. In a rapidly changing world and a climate of growing anxiety, it’s not surprising that we are worried for ourselves and those we love. It’s difficult not to over-consume anxiety-provoking media at this time and that anxiety can become overwhelming.

Constant worry, anxiety, fear and stress all deplete our immune system and impact negatively on our mental health. Add social isolation into the mix and we have a recipe for ill-health. Thankfully, we have some valuable FREE resources available to support us all.

Living with worry and anxiety amidst global uncertainty

Dr Matthew Whalley and Dr Hardeep Kaur from Psychology Tools have put together a guide to help us to manage our worry and anxiety in these uncertain times:

Human beings have the amazing ability to think about future events. ‘Thinking ahead’ means that we can anticipate obstacles or problems, and gives us the opportunity to plan solutions. When it helps us to achieve our goals, ‘thinking ahead’ can be helpful. For example, hand washing and social distancing are helpful things that we can decide to do in order to prevent the spread of the virus.

However, worrying is a way of ‘thinking ahead’ that often leaves us feeling anxious or apprehensive. When we worry excessively, we often think about worst-case scenarios and feel that we won’t be able to cope.

The guide explains:

  • What is worry and anxiety and what triggers it
  • Different types of worry, when it becomes a problem and what we can do about it
  • A variety of simple exercises and decision-making trees
  • Challenging our thoughts compassionately

When you have read the information, try out the exercises if you think they might help. It’s natural to struggle when times are uncertain, so remember to offer care and compassion to yourself, and to those around you.
